Apple Planning to Make in India AirPods: Report

Apple has just revealed intentions to manufacture the newest iPhone 14 in India. Additionally, to further transfer its production base away from China, it is now anticipated that specific units of AirPods will be manufactured in India. It will be the first time we have seen AirPods “Made in India.” Here are the specifics that need to be investigated.

Production of AirPods is Going to Start in India Very Soon

According to a report published by Nikkei Asia, Apple is reportedly in discussions with local suppliers to begin manufacturing specific units of AirPods and maybe even the Beats headphones in India. The search for a replacement for China, which has served as the key production base for the Cupertino corporation, is the primary objective of this venture. Problems with the supply chain and tensions with the United States are to blame for this situation.

It is expected that Foxconn, one of the significant iPhone vendors, will manufacture Beats headphones and AirPods in the future. Also, begin manufacturing AirPods. It is anticipated that another manufacturer, Luxshare Precision Industry, which is currently accountable for producing AirPods in Vietnam and China, would contribute in some way. The firm will initially focus on production in Vietnam so that the AirPods may be created more slowly than its Indian counterparts.

There is no information on when this will occur or which AirPods will be produced in India. In India, Apple currently manufactures the iPhone 13, and the company only just began producing the iPhone 14. The iPhone XR, the iPhone 12, iPhone 11, and other models are on the list. In most cases, this occurs in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states.

India has also emerged as a significant market for Apple, contributing twice as much revenue in the second quarter of 2022. Producing more gadgets in India may increase the country’s market share, draw in a more significant number of customers, and lead to price reductions in the long run. JP Morgan believes that Apple might manufacture 25% of the world’s iPhones in India by 2025.

Joey Yen, an analyst at IDC, thinks that Apple has the opportunity to make India a significant part of its global production network. In a statement to Nikkei Asia, Yen stated, “India is learning from China’s success over the years, and it has a similar potential to become a very meaningful player in the global supply chain. It has young engineering talent and a big workforce, and a massive domestic market as a foundation.“

Apple has not yet responded to this. Because these are just assumptions, we will need to wait for an official statement before moving further. Thus, it is in everyone’s best interest to hold off and see how Apple moves its manufacturing centers from China to other locations, with India as a critical possibility.
