According to reports, India will begin rolling out 5G services in September.
The 5G spectrum auction in India just finished, with Jio claiming the most bandwidth, followed by Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and a new entrant: Adani Group. Following this, 5G was supposed to launch on August 15, however, there may now be a launch date.
The 5G rollout in India will begin on this day!
People close to the situation have claimed (via BusinessLine) that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would formally introduce 5G services in India on September 29, the day of the yearly Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022. This is a three-day event that takes place at Pragati Maidan.
This was initially scheduled for August 15 as an initial deployment. 5G is planned to reach several cities as part of the initial phase of deployment in October and will subsequently reach other areas. The actual commercial availability is envisaged in a year or two.
The move might be intended to better prepare telecom companies for the 5G deployment in at least a select place.
According to an unnamed senior government source, “September 29 will be the first day of the IMC and the Prime Minister is likely to launch the 5G services commercially, where all telecom operators and their vendors will be showcasing the 5G technology. There will also be global players at the three-day event to be held between September 29 and October 1 at Pragati Maidan.”
It has also been disclosed that this year’s Independence Day may see some 5G-related announcements in India, including a discussion of the recent 5G spectrum auction.
To recap, the Indian government received almost Rs 1.5 lakh crore in the auction, which is nearly quadruple the previous sale of Rs 77,815 crore in 4G airwaves. It is also predicted that 5G costs in India would be competitive, similar to 4G prices. It is unclear when the actual 5G deployment would begin in India. More information will be forthcoming. So keep an eye out. Meanwhile, if you want to learn more about 5G bands in India or 5Gi, which is also likely to be implemented shortly, check out our stories!
