Check out LG ‘s upgraded optical telephoto zoom camera module for improved zooming capabilities on smartphones. The camera module will be introduced ahead of CES 2023, which takes place between January 5 and January 8.
LG announces its brand-new optical zoom camera
A telephoto optical zoom camera is a microcomponent for smartphones, which integrates telescopic capabilities into phones, mostly designed for mirrorless cameras and DSLRs. It’s on the phone’s back.
LG has introduced the zoom actuator for this purpose, which moves the lens to change focal distance quickly and accurately to ensure high-quality outputs. With the zoom actuator, LG has been able to achieve magnifications of 4x and 9x while maintaining image quality. It provides durability while consuming less battery power.
Photos and videos can also be stabilized with an optical image stabilizer (OIS).
According to LG, the main advantage of its technology is that it can zoom freely up to 9x with one module. Usually, fixed zoom modules allow for magnification up to a limit, while digital zoom takes care of the rest.
It states that “for smartphone manufacturers, fewer modules mean more space inside the phone and enhanced battery efficiency, which is why LG Innotek’s optical telephoto zoom camera module is receiving so much attention.”
LG collaborated with Qualcomm to further optimize the technology and apply it to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform. This platform has a significantly smaller module size to avoid the big camera bump. Image tuning features like autofocus, autoexposure, and more will be added.
There is no word on which phones will get the optical zoom camera module, but rumor has it that the next-generation Galaxy S24 could utilize it.
