Local smartphone maker Micromax Informatics, is not too happy with IDC’s recent take about the smartphone market. Micromax claims that there is other data which shows that company is still the number two smartphone vendor in India as opposed to the recent IDC report.

The IDC report that came out recently, stated that Micromax was dethroned by Intex another local smartphone maker in India. According to the report, Samsung led the market with 21.6 percent share while the domestic handset firm Intex toppled Micromax (11.6 percent) to become the second largest player with 11.8 percent.

Micromax Informatics CEO, Vineet Taneja told the Economics Times, “We continue to retain our No.2 position (behind Samsung). We imported almost 9.7 million devices in the (third) quarter. The smartphone contribution is ahead of competition. We 5.5 million, remainder was feature. Towards similar period, the other (company) in question imported 8.4 million handsets,”
Supporting his claim was recent data coming from other market research analysts like Counterpoint and CMR that state that Micromax is still safe at second place.

While import reports are usually accurate, Taneja commented that different research agencies have different methodologies for obtaining data and this may lead to some blindspots.

Taneja also stated that the company conducts its own research citing that its numbers show that Micromax is far ahead of any other Indian brand in the smartphone segment.
