Samsung Electronics has introduced a virtual reality headset at the ongoing IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin. The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition, which is powered by Oculus technology, is Samsung’s latest entry in the smart wearable category but this time via Virtual Reality.
Samsung partnered with Oculus, which was recently acquired by Facebook, in building the product. The Samsung virtual reality headset is powered by the Galaxy Note 4, meaning you’ll need the Note 4 as well to fully experience the product as the headset uses the Galaxy Note 4’s Quad 1440p AMOLED screen as the display. According to this post, it even uses the phablet’s processor and graphics to run applications.
So what are the specifications of this Virtual Reality Headset like? We take a quick look.
The dimension of Headset are 198(W) x 116(L) x 90(H)mm. In terms of inches that would mean a width of around 7-inches, a length of around 4-inches and the device is nearly 3.5-inches thick. Where design goes, it looks drastically different from other Oculus Rift 1 created by Oculus, as it seems much more compact that the older device.
As far as specs go, it has a an Optical Lens, a 96˚ Field of View. In terms of sensors, the list includes Accelerator, Gyrometer, Magnetic, Proximity. Motion to Photon Latency is less than 20ms (milliseconds), which is ultra-low. In virtual reality, latency is the lag time between when a user acts and when the virtual environment reflects that action.
The device will adjust for people who may be nearsighted/farsighted. It also has a touch pad, back button, volume key. To connect the device to your Samsung Galaxy Note 4 users can rely on a microUSB 1.1 connection.
It also has four new experiences built by Oculus which include Oculus Home (Oculus Store viewer), Oculus Cinema (virtual movie theatre for viewing 2D and 3D movies), Oculus 360 Videos and Oculus 360 Photos for playing panoramic content.
Users will also get a microSD Card(16GB) in-box, which will include collection of 360-degree videos and 3D movie trailers from major studios. Some of the content includes, an exclusive access to Tony Stark’s Lab inside the all new Avengers Tower. IMAX is offering samples of Hollywood and documentary films in a virtual theatre.
DreamWorks VR from DreamWorks Animation will allow Samsung Gear VR users to interact and laugh with DreamWorks characters and content. There’s also some fun stuff for Pacific Rim fans as they can enjoy the Jaeger pilot as an immersive content experience.
The Samsung Gear VR will be available in Frost White through the Samsung online channel and selectively by carriers this year.
