It looks like Samsung is getting ready to introduce a third variant in the Gear 2 series. News out of Korea indicates that the manufacturer will soon offer a version of the Gear 2 which features a USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity). The inclusion of this hardware allows users to make calls directly from the smartwatch even if it is not connected to a mobile device. The Gear 2 model with the calling feature will be exclusive to South Korea’s SK Telecom initially. However, an insider source at the carrier mentioned that it is likely that the device will be available in more territories.
One of the main issues when enclosing a USIM module in a smartwatch is battery drain. A Gear 2 with a USIM module will be much more power hungry, and considering that the device comes with a meager 315 mAh battery, it is not known as to how Samsung is tackling the issue of battery life. While the USIM version of the Gear 2 is still uncertain, Samsung’s other wearable devices, the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit are set to launch soon. What do you think of such a device?
