Samsung is expected to showcase the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Galaxy S5 will formally be launched in March or April depending on the market.
As far as specs go, the smartphone is likely to come with a 5.5-inch screen with a massive 2560×1440 pixels screen resolution. The pixel density is thus likely to be 560 ppi. The camera is expected to to be a 16-megapixel camera on the rear. Where design is concerned, Samsung is likely to ditch the polycarbonate casing for metal in this edition of the S5, although a gold version of the smartphone is also rumoured.
Questions still remain about the processor for the S5. In September, Samsung had promised to come up with a new 64-bit chip to compete with Apple. Speculation is rife that the next device in its popular high-end “S” series would feature this chipset. However, the leaked benchmark that pointed to the 2K display also lists a Snapdragon 800 chipset clocked at 2.4GHz along with the Adreno 330 GPU. However Samsung could surprise users and the S5 could come with Samsung’s own Exynos 6 chip and the phone could come in configurations – one powered by a Qualcomm processor and another by Exynos 6 chip.
In terms of memory, the S5 is expected to have 3GB of RAM, going by the Galaxy Note 3 and will start at 16 GB total memory space. The biggest change that is rumoured is the fingerprint scanner, which was confirmed by trusted Samsung source SamMobile. It will reportedly be integrated into the home button of the S5 and has deep-rooted functionality, rather than just being a way to unlock the phone. Samsung has ditched the eye-scanner for now, it would appear.
